Engaged Opportunity Grants

Ujamaa Community Abroad Experience in Cuba

Supporting a cultural immersion trip for students in the Ujamaa Residential College

This grant helps fund a cultural immersion and service trip to Cuba, where students gain an understanding of Cuban culture, from religion and food to music and history. In pre-departure workshops, the students learn about the country and reflect on their expectations. While in Cuba, the students conduct a book drive and participate in a book reading with members of the local community. After returning to Ithaca, the team will host another book reading at Greater Ithaca Activities Center (GIAC), where they will share photos and a video from the event in Santiago and read excerpts from books by African American and Cuban authors.
