The Role of Home Care Workers

Understanding the perspectives of home care workers who care for adults with heart failure

Heart failure is a complex disease, and many older adults with heart failure rely on caregivers for help. There are currently 2.2 million paid home care workers in the U.S., and the field is expected to grow by 38 percent by 2024. Heart failure patients are increasingly relying on home care workers, yet these workers have not been the focus of medical research or behavioral interventions.

This qualitative study aims to understand the views and experiences of these home care workers, describe their understanding of heart-failure management and identify challenges and barriers associated with taking care of adults with heart failure. The findings will inform the development of an intervention designed to improve their experience taking care of adults with heart failure, better integrate home care workers into the care team and improve the quality of care that they provide adults with heart failure.
