Shared Vision Planning for Lake Ontario

Using team-based consulting to address water resource challenges faced by communities on the shores of Lake Ontario.

Shared Vision Planning is an approach to water resources management that invites the public into the planning process. The Department of Biological and Environmental Engineering is introducing the principles of Shared Vision Planning into its curriculum with two courses in which students work with communities facing water resource challenges along the southern shore of Lake Ontario in New York. Students meet with community partners to identify water quality and flood risk issues and then work in teams to design projects that address these challenges. Throughout the process, students incorporate the feedback of community partners and local stakeholders into their projects. The work that emerges from this team-based consulting model provides tangible benefits to communities seeking a path towards more resilient shorelines.
