Engaged Opportunity Grants

Disaster and Emergency Preparedness for Vulnerable Populations

Examining how communities and local agencies can better assist vulnerable populations in the event of a disaster or emergency.

Older adults and individuals with disabilities seldom give much thought towards disaster preparedness, and first responders are often ill prepared to serve them in an emergency. This project seeks to understand the readiness and concerns of such vulnerable populations and identify local resources that might assist them in the event of a disaster or emergency in Tompkins County. Students review best practices and recommendations for emergency and disaster preparedness for older adults and individuals with disabilities, and they also receive training on interacting with people who have a variety of disabilities and/or limitations. This community-engaged research not only provides a better understanding of individual preparedness; it also enhances the ability of service providers and first responders to assist these community members.
