Engaged Opportunity Grants

Critical Reflection in STEM Service-Learning Internships

Fostering deep learning through international service-learning internships at the Roatan Institute of Marine Sciences, Honduras

Science research internships have well-documented positive effects on student comprehension, self-efficacy, motivation and confidence; but how does learning change when you combine traditional STEM curricula with reflections on self-identity, values and intercultural communication? This project team is finding out by engaging students in a STEM discipline while fostering students’ intercultural sensitivity, intellectual development, reflections on their own identity and sense of global citizenship.

While many programs offer students the opportunity to participate in either a service-learning experience or an internship, this program combines features from both while fostering deep learning through reflection and community engagement.
