Cornell Sustainable Landscape Trail

Creating a Sustainable Landscape Trail on campus that educates the Cornell community about sustainable landscape practices and their environmental benefits.

Sustainable landscapes and the ecosystem services they provide are often invisible to the public. This project establishes an on-campus Sustainable Landscape Trail that educates the Cornell community about sustainable landscape development and its environmental benefits, such as reducing storm water runoff, improving water and air quality and conserving energy. A series of marked stops on the trail are linked to a website with written descriptions that explain why the area is sustainable and what ecosystem services it provides. The trail also acts as a teaching tool to model best practices for community partners such as urban foresters, landscape architects and facilities managers. Student interns work on the trail during the growing season and learn how sustainable landscape affects the campus environment.
