About the Project
Nucci is designing a new engineering course, ENGRG 3360: Developing Communicative Practice Through Transmedia and Community Engagement, to empower Cornell students to communicate their love and passion for scientific/engineering pursuits with middle and high school audiences through emotionally engaging narratives and hands-on experiences.
Leveraging the expertise of community partner Nancy Coddington, director of science content, services and programming at WSKG, Ithaca’s local PBS and NPR affiliate, the course will offer extensive role model training where students learn how to implement practical and effective learning strategies for science communication, classroom management and inquiry-based learning. Students will also get in-depth training on new and emerging media used in professional settings to teach scientific concepts and learn how to create quality videos and graphics, and share this content through news media platforms.
The course will be particularly useful to engineering project team members seeking to promote and fundraise for their teams, as well as to doctoral students seeking academic careers. It is expected that the voiced-over presentations and videos created will be uploaded onto Engineering Project Team, Cornell faculty or students’ individual webpages to help promote their work to a wider audience. The content created will possibly reach a national audience via PBS Learning Media, a website used annually by thousands of teachers across the country, if it passes the muster of the WSKG scientific advisory board. It will also be uploaded to a WSKG curated YouTube channel.
